St John of Avila was a holy diocesan priest who lived in sixteenth century Spain. Amongst his disciples were St John of God, St Francis Borgia, and Venerable Anne of the Cross. St John of Avila was also the priest who confirmed as authentic St Teresa of Avila’s mystical experiences when she sought his guidance. In this course we will look at the spiritual advice which St John of Avila sets forth in his work Audi Filia and various letters to his directees. Particular emphasis will be given to his advice concerning trials and temptations, and what is essential to help us advance toward union with God.
